7 myths about autism

7 myths about autism

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as few as 1 in 100 people are on the autism spectrum. Despite such a large number of autistic people, part of society makes cognitive errors that falsify the image of autism. The notion of autism is met with common beliefs, which are often untrue and reproduce myths and stereotypes, distorting the true image of people on the spectrum in society.

1. the myth of vaccinations causing autism

The biggest myth still is that vaccinations can cause autism. Scientific studies prove that the origins of autism are neurodevelopmental and go back to the child's prenatal state. The incidence of autism in vaccinated and unvaccinated children is not statistically different. Vaccines causing autism is a myth that must be fought.

2. the myth of the genius

3. the myth of intellectual disability

Autism spectrum does not mean that an autistic person is intellectually disabled. These traits may or may not coexist with each other.

4. the myth of emotional distance

Autistic people may need support in their relationships with other people. However, most of them want to establish them. They are able to open up to others, enter into relationships and make friends. Just like everyone else, they want to have friends, work, and have contact with other people on a daily basis

5. the myth of autism only in children

Autism accompanies a person throughout life. It is with her from birth to adulthood and late adulthood. It is a condition that does not go away. There are more adults on the autism spectrum than children. Autistic people need support throughout their lives. Limiting support to only children is hurtful to many people and their families and diminishes their quality of life.

6. the myth of the cure for autism

7. the myth of autism only in boys

Autism occurs in both boys and girls. Once apparent in statistics, the large difference in prevalence in both sexes has been decreasing in recent years. This is explained by the development of diagnostic methods. Because girls adapt better socially and are more difficult to diagnose. In addition, there are autistic people who define themselves as non-binary and do not identify with any gender.
