Difficult situation of adults with autism in Poland

Life for many adults with autism is extremely difficult. There is no widely functioning form of support for them in Poland. One of the few homes for autistic people has just been threatened with closure.

Adults with autism have aging parents. Parents are finding it increasingly difficult to care for their already large but still loved children. Many of them require tremendous help on a daily basis because they are not independent, do not communicate, and need round-the-clock attention and care. And their families do not receive enough support.

The amount of subsidy from the state for an adult on the autism spectrum, covers only part of the cost.
But maintaining her is much more, often as much as double. The state invokes the family code
and guardianship and forces parents to subsidize the care of the adult. This is an incredible burden on them.

"In Nursing Homes that house adults on the spectrum, there is also no differentiation in the amount of such funding, regardless of the level of functioning of such a person. The homes receive a fixed amount from you, and here the intensity of care needed, the level of assistance needed, should be taken into account." - says Tomasz Michalowicz, President of the JiM Foundation.

There are countries in Europe where adults on the spectrum have support from the state, consisting of a complete takeover of care. There, parents are not left alone with this problem and burden.

"Here we must also raise the issue of care for adults with autism
in the context of the number of people per 1 adult on the spectrum. According to the norms, there are ½ caregivers per disabled person. In homes for people with autism, such caregivers are often needed four times more!"
- Tomasz Michalowicz adds.

Many people on the spectrum require 24-hour care throughout their lives. Many times they need help
in the simplest activities, such as washing, dressing or eating.

After the death of their parents, such people end up in "state" Nursing Homes or psychiatric hospitals. This is no place for them. They should go to homes like the Life Farm, where adults on the spectrum have decent living conditions, specialized care, a peaceful pace of life. They have a place tailored to their needs, acting as a family home.

The "Save the Life Farm for Adults with Autism" collection is being conducted here
